At the foot of the Serra da Marofa, between the valleys of the Côa and Águeda rivers, which flow into the international and neighboring Douro river, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo is a village with a wine tradition where high quality wines are produced. It was around the 12th century that the Cistercian monks inhabited the Convent of Santa Maria de Aguiar and, with their knowledge, started the culture of the vineyard and the production of wine. Today, Adega Castelo Rodrigo assumes itself as heir to this knowledge and art. Founded in 1956, it currently has about 1050 hectares of vineyard in operation.
