Quinta dos Currais

Located in the middle of Cova da Beira, between the mountains of Gardunha and Estrela, in the parish of Capinha, municipality of Fundão, the “Quinta dos Currais, Sociedade Agrícola Lda.”, was born to create, in this region, a wine exploitation in modern molds, with its own grape varieties from Beira Interior, which would translate into the production of a high quality wine. The vineyard, with an area of 30 hectares, is part of a total of 130 hectares that make up “Quinta dos Currais”, which also includes a forest and an olive grove. The owners, a couple of third generation winegrowers, bet on the region, where they have origins and in a first phase, in 1996, fully planted 30 hectares of vineyards, exclusively with typical grape varieties from the region, making the most of the North-South exposure and the schist soil. In the white wine grape varieties, it was decided to plant Arinto, Síria and Fonte-Cal; in the red wine grape varieties it was decided to plant Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen and Rufete. In a second phase, a wine cellar equipped with the most modern oenological technology was built, from the destemmer to the automatic press, as well as a cold plant, a properly equipped laboratory, storage and fermentation vats and a modern line of bottling and labeling. Despite all the technology present in the cellar, Quinta dos Currais still opts, today, for a traditional harvest, with manual harvesting for baskets, considering that this allows a better control of the entire winemaking process. In 2004, his three children became formally involved in the project, and the Sociedade Agrícola Quinta dos Currais, a totally family company, was formed. Quinta dos Currais wines have established themselves as a reference in Beira Interior, having won several awards in the main national and international competitions.
